Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI) Bengaluru established as Regional
Research
Centre in
1971 was subsequently known as Regional Research Institute, National Dietetics Research
Institute and
Regional Ayurveda Research Institute for Metabolic Disorders before its upgradation as
CARI
in 2020.
CARI houses a multidisciplinary team engaged in diverse research and integrative
healthcare
activities.
Clinical services are provided through its NABL and NABH accredited hospital wing. The
institute focuses
its research efforts primarily on metabolic disorders and Ayurveda dietetics, with
additional domains
covering outreach healthcare research, drug standardization, and medicinal plants
research.
Currently,
CARI is conducting over 25 research projects jointly with prestigious institutions such
as
IISc
Bengaluru, NIMHANS Bengaluru, ICMR-NITM Belagavi, CSIR-CFTRI Mysuru, ICAR-IIHR
Bengaluru,
University of
Agricultural Sciences Bengaluru, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Belagavi, and
University
of Trans
Disciplinary Health Sciences and Technology Bengaluru, among others.
This collaborative approach underscores CARI's commitment to advancing Ayurvedic
research
and
integrative healthcare practices, aiming to enhance understanding, treatment, and
management
of health
issues through traditional knowledge and modern scientific methods.

Ayurveda Day is celebrated on Dhanvantari Jayanti, which is the
13th day of the dark fortnight in
Ashwin. This day usually falls in October or November. The Government of India
officially declared
Ayurveda Day in 2016 to promote Ayurveda as a traditional system of medicine. The
Government of
India vide its notification published in Gazette of India, Extra ordinary Part I dated
01st June,
2017, has resolved to celebrate “Ayurveda Day” every year on the auspicious day of
‘Dhanwantari
Jayanti – Dhanteras’ since 2016 in Whole of Government approach. This year the 9th
Ayurveda day
falls on 29th October, 2024.
The theme for Ayurveda Day 2024 is :
"Ayurveda innovation for Global Health".
"वैश्विक स्वास्थ्य के लिए आयुर्वेद नवाचार".
Centre of Excellence for Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders at
Indian Institute of Science (IISc),
Bengaluru, Awarded by Ministry of Ayush, Government of India was inaugurated by the
Hon'ble Prime
Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi on the occasion of 9th National Ayurveda Day on
29th October
2024. CARI Bengaluru is one of the collaborators in this high impact project.

A 28 bedded in-patient facility was inaugurated on 8th July 2024 in the Institute. Dignitaries like Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General, CCRAS, Dr. Koustubha Upadhyaya Advisor (Ay.) Ministry of Ayush, Govt of India, Prof. Navakanth Bhat, Dean CeNSE, IISc Bengaluru, Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director, CSIR- CFTRI, Dr. Shrikanta, renowned endocrinologist graced the occasion in the presence of Dr. Sulochana Bhat, Head of the Institute.
